Every church along the Camino de Santiago, the most important and most travelled of the routes to Santiago, tells of the pilgrims who, over the centuries, have associated their motives, desires, hopes and concerns with reaching a milestone along the way. Without their enthusiasm, efforts and donations, most of these churches would not exist.
In this series, you will see images of church domes in a vertical perspective, taken during two hikes to Santiago de Compostela. The strong motivation of their builders, their artistic power and religious penetration, which can be felt through the atmosphere and aesthetics, become apparent to us when we enter the churches of the Way of St. James not only in passing, but with an open mind to new things. The firmament, in the minds of the medieval people the sphere and fortification of the fixed stars in the sky, finds a clear correspondence in the design of many church domes, which removes the boundary between the observer and the experience of the otherworldly, allowing him to participate in heavenly events. The outer and inner peace that can be found there is contemplative and actually has a creative effect.
